Electrospinning of Ceramic Fiber Mats from a Suspension

Ceramic fibers and mats are important structures in a wide range of applications, such as filter, sensors, and medical applications. In this work we use electrospinning technique to form ceramic fibers and mats from a suspension. Suspensions containing nano-zirconia particles, nano-hydroxyappatite particles were modified by adding polymer solutions to make it suitable for electrospinning. Zirconia/polymer, nano-Hydroxyapatite (HA) /polymer composite fiber mats were produced first, and then subjected to heat treatment to remove the polymer, therefore ceramic fiber mats were obtained. The Zirconia fibers with diameter down to 200nm were produced with excellent uniformity. Nano-HA/collagen fibers mats were also produced. Ceramic fiber mats with controllable opening size were obtained using stainless steel meshes as grounded guiding collectors. By applying different ground collectors, different patterned structures were obtained.
