Synthesis of Cordierite Powders by Precursor Method and Their Modification for LTCC Application

Nano-sized cordierite powders were synthesized and characterized for powders properties using thermal analysis, electron microscopy, and dielectric properties measurement at the high frequency range. The basic cordierite composition was further modified for low temperature sintering under 900 degree C for LTCC application. Cordierite powders were synthesized with solution immersion method using nitrate/hydrate precursors with water media and nano-porous polymer pulps. The prepared precursor solutions were immersed into the pulps with a ratio of 50:50 wt%, and then kept in 1 hour at room temperature. The powders were heat treated at various temperatures to obtain proper particle size, dielectric and sintering properties. The modification of the primary composition was made by either cation substitution and/or by the addition of sintering aids. Thus obtained cordierite base powders were pressed in to pellets and sintered, then investigated the structure and microwave dielectric properties.
