Multilayer Piezo Actuators for Injection Valves
Keywords: piezoelectric actuator, diesel injection valve,
The injection technology for Diesel motors has changed significantly by introducing the Common Rail System since 1996.The advantage of this technology is the free selection of injections resulting in more powerful, quieter and more efficient motors with less emission. This has lead to a great increase in the registered diesel vehicles in Europe. The latest generation requires high switching speed and great forces. Ideal conditions for using piezoelectric actuators The demands on the piezo actuators are illustrated by introducing the piezo inline injector of Bosch and the resulting requirement for actuator itself are discussed. In order to meet the automotive requirements an appropriate actuator has to be developed. Design, material and processes have to be developed in such a way that the functionality over the lifetime of 15 years and 1 billion switching cycles is guaranteed. The key features are highlighted. Apart from the current solution the future challenges are reported.
