Embedded Magnetics Constuction: Materials, Design and Process

Transformers and inductors are fundamental building blocks of most electronic systems. They are used for voltage isolation, signal coupling, energy storage and filtering. As with embedded resistors and capacitors, embedded magnetics offer size reductions and performance improvements. This paper describes the construction and fabrication of a common mode filter device for use in data communicaitons. MEMs processe are used to photo-image a three dimensional circuits onto a molded plastic substrate. Ferrite cores are loaded into the three dimensional cavity and the inductive windings are completed using established printed circuit techniques. The device is characterized and compared to devices constructed with the traditional method of hand-winding. The application space is broad and crosses data communications, power conversion and RF systems.
