What is Halide-Free and What Does it Mean to Me?
Keywords: halide, halogen, solder
What is Halide-Free and What does it Means to Me? With numerous halogen-containing substances under scrutiny by the European Union as possible additions to the banned substances list, we have received numerous inquiries from customers asking how this legislation will affect them and their processes. Having just left the pain of going lead-free behind, they want to know what halogens and halides are, and what changes they should be prepared for if forced to stop using them. Halide-free and halogen-free materials are not new. Some segments of the electronics industry have been sensitive to halogens and halides and their significance for decades. This paper will give the reader a working knowledge of halogens and halides. Armed with this education, the reader will be able to make informed decisions when eventually required to comply with changes in environmental legislation applying to halogens and halides.
