Dielectric Resonators for Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging

RF magnetic fields in the 100 MHz to 900 MHz range are transmitted into the biological sample via a tuned ceramic dielectric resonator (DR). The intensity and uniformity of the magnetic field distribution were explored for two resonant modes (TE011 and HE 011). Analytical and simulation results were compared with experiments for CaTiO3 ceramic resonators and good agreement was found in terms of the magnetic field distributions. In addition, it was discovered that coupling RF energy into the DR from a coaxial cable was the main impediment toward achieving high RF magnetic field strength within the biological sample. A number of coupling schemes were explored with the goal of maximizing the transmitted power for both the TE and HE modes. The effect of RF magnetic field intensity on the magnetic resonance image quality will be presented.
