ALTERNATIVE STRATEGIES FOR THE PREPARATION OF MULTIFERROIC THIN FILMS

This talk is about alternative strategies to prepare multiferroic thin films aiming at engineered properties of functional nanostructures. It is well known that the current progress of microelectronics is towards miniaturization and nanoelectronics, known as Beyond CMOS are starting to be a reality. Also within this microelectronics progress line, known as More than Moore, new devices, new materials and new techniques are being considered and some good examples are the micro and nano-systems (MEMS y NEMS) and sensors and actuators that incorporate capabilities to facilitate a wide and varied interaction with different media and non-electronic properties: fluids, pressure, temperature, optical, chemical and biochemical concentrations amongst others. Multiferroics, where ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism are intimately combined, are of a great fundamental and technological importance for these applications. Within this context we have been exploiting porosity at the nanoscale as a strategy to create ferroic nanocomposites. In this talk different strategies to synthesise nanoporous ferroics using chemical base approaches will be presented. As a case study the use of Porous ferroelectric thin films of BaTiO3, prepared starting from sol-gel solutions and evaporation induced self-assembly technique, that are being used as matrices and the functionalization of the ferroelectric porous matrix with magnetic elements and compounds by electrochemical and electrophoretic techniques will be presented.
