Status Update: Geothermal 300C MWD Tool for US-DOE
Keywords: Drilling, Geothermal, Instrumentation
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has recognized the need for drilling guidance devices to enable efficient drilling of wells for Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS.) Measurement While Drilling (MWD) technology used in petroleum development currently tops out just above 200°C. For EGS drilling, MWD tools must operate up to 300°C to exploit North American hot-rock reservoirs. A project funded by the DOE is in progress, utilizing the latest in high-temperature ASICs, sensors, and other components. This presentation will report on the current status.
