It's Amazing
It's amazing to me that this is my next to last column as President of IMAPS. Where does the time go. I have several things to talk about in this issue, so here goes.
The Flip Chip Conference and Exhibition in Austin, Texas, was held on June 18-20 and was a major success. A strong technical program including PDCs, state of the art technical presentations and two days of tabletop exhibits, held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin, was a clear indicator that this technology is firmly establishing itself in the marketplace.
The Symposium is almost upon us. As of this writing the booth sales to date are ahead of the pace set by the Boston Symposium, in fact they are essentially sold out. Kudos to Ann Bell. The technical program offers a breadth of presentations that is hard to compare in the industry. There will also be 22 Professional Development Courses (PDCs) offered covering such topics as Hands-on Wirebonding and Screen Printing, Lead Free Solder, Physics of Failure, Microvia technology and 17 others. This is a must attend event, so I look forward to seeing you there.
IMAPS is also pursuing a relationship with ACerS, where their expertise in ceramic based materials and our expertise in applications of the materials would provide benefit to the membership of both societies. Look for more on this in subsequent issues of Advancing Microelectronics.
I recently returned from the Far East where I attended and presented at the IMAPS Conferences in Tokyo, Japan; Seoul, Korea; Taipei, Taiwan; and Hong Kong. I would like to take the opportunity to personally thank those individuals responsible for the development of the meetings, as they were all very successful. Particularly, I would like to thank Dr. Noburo Ichinose (General Chair), Dr. Shin-ichi Nishi and Kaoru Hashimoto (Vice General Chairs), and Dr. Sei-ichi Denda, Koji Nihei and Haruhiko Yamamoto (Advisors) for their work on ICEP 2001 in Tokyo; Dr. Wan-Ho Kang (President of IMAPS Korea), Dr.Yong-Bin Sun (Technical Chair) and Dr. Joon Lee (Advisor) for the 6th International Symposium in Korea; Dr. Shen-Li Fu (General Chair), Dennis Hsi and Stanley Huang (Technical Chairs) for the IMAPS Taiwan 2001 Symposium; and Daniel Chan and S. L. Law (Co-chairs) for the IMAPS Pacific Rim Meeting in Hong Kong. Their work demonstrated that the “I” in IMAPS is truly “International.” In addition, the hospitality extended to my wife and me was more than we could have imagined. I am extremely pleased to call you my friends. On a personal note I would like to thank Yoko Tachikawa and Hyung-Ju Kim for taking my wife, June, and Chuck Bauer's wife, Katherine, on tours of Tokyo and Seoul, respectively. Photos of the meetings are included in this issue of Advancing Microelectronics and are also on the web site. Of particular interest is the photo of me showing how adept I am with chopsticks.
On a more serious note, discussions were held with all of the various chapter leaders in the Far East regarding the formation of an International Liaison Committee. It was a consensus of their opinions that an Asian Liaison Committee is formed first, emulating the European Liaison Committee, before integrating an ILC. Paul Van Loan, as the 1st Past President, will follow through on their suggestions. In addition, the formation of Chapters in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing were discussed. I think it is safe to say that the development of IMAPS chapters in those areas will occur in the near future. We also discussed the possibility of an International ATW being held at the I-Shou University in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Chuck and I toured the facility and, in my opinion, it is absolutely perfect for an ATW type environment. We will be following up on the process for forming such an event. We'll keep you posted.
In the last issue I highlighted the accomplishments of Staff member, Brian Schieman. In this issue I'd like to focus on the activities of the staff members responsible for Individual and Corporate membership and customer service. I think it's important that you, the members of IMAPS, know the skill sets of our staff members.
