Successful Spring Events!
Chicago-Milwaukee
Our April 24 all day seminar was a rousing success. We had 117 people attending (I believe it was a record number for us) compared to last year’s attendance of 90 people. The 27 vendor tables were the maximum that could be fit in at Chandler’s. I want to thank Paul Kaiser for coordinating the reservations at Chandler’s, taking care of reservations of attendees, obtaining the exhibitors and setting up the exhibitors’ tables (Paul got some assistance from Bill Kidder); Dick Gehman for getting many of the speakers and putting the program together; Bill Kidder for taking care of the financials of the meeting; Bill Kidder, Gino Domenella, Mark Lindahl and people like Ken Burke and Jack Sherman who made calls to get people to the meeting; Mark Naretto who got our advertisements of the meeting out in a timely manner; and Loren Saar and his wife Nancy who took reservations at the symposium. I would also like to thank Richard Breck for contacting some of the key companies in our area and asking their help in getting out the attendance.
The success of the program was the result of many factors; speaker subjects, vendor exhibits, timely advertisement, word of mouth particularly by the vendors who go around to see people in our industry. I would particularly like to thank the vendors who exhibited at the show. These are the companies who supply the bulk of the financials that made this seminar a huge financial success. This is in addition to the gifts they donate to the Raffle.
Garden State
Garden State Chapter held its Spring Packaging Symposium on May 15th at Lucent Technologies, Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ. There were 2 sessions: (1) Flip Chip and 3D Packaging and (2) Materials and Process Technologies for Advanced Substrates. The event drew over 100 attendees and 27 exhibiting vendors. President Al Lyons presented outgoing President Bill Grieg with a gift from the chapter. After the sessions there was a gourmet buffet and drawings for door prizes.
The chapter thanks the authors, vendors, attendees, and the Program Committee for making this event a success. The chapter also thanks Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill for hosting the event.

New England
Under the direction of Chapter President John Redman of Accumet Engineering, the New England Chapter held its 29th Annual Symposium & Exhibition on May 1, 2002, at the Boxborough Woods Conference Center in Boxborough, Massachusetts. An outstanding Technical Program, chaired by Dr. David D’Ambra of DuPont Electronic Materials, featured five lecture sessions with 22 speakers, a Microwave Packaging Open Forum Panel Discussion featuring a four-member panel comprised of industry experts and a Poster Session with 16 presenters, several of whom were representatives of our Worcester Polytechnic Institute Student Chapter. Some sessions were so popular that all the seats were filled and participants were standing.
Several hundred Red, White and Blue balloons punctuated the red and silver draped Exhibit Hall, courtesy of our Arrangements Chair, Mark Belanger, where company representatives staffed 77 booths displaying the current offerings of microelectronics equipment, materials, component and service suppliers throughout the world. The aisles were abuzz as early morning registration surged and Registration Chair, Tania Keefe, reported that total participation reached about 540 individuals, including 11 new members.
Excitement peaked at Big Red’s Bistro during the afternoon raffles, as appreciative winners were claiming Restaurant Gift Certificates, Lobsters, Golf Balls, Red Sox Tickets, Baskets of Wine and 15 other exhibitor-donated prizes. Finally, The Chapter Grand Prize, a Boston Harbor Gourmet Dinner Cruise for two on “The Odyssey ,” went to Carmen Losanno of Advance Reproductions. When five o’clock rolled around, the crowd began to disperse, exhibitors started packing up their materials and balloons were untied. But, the room remained decorated with weary smiles and thirty companies had signed up as “EarlyBirds” for next year’s show.
The full technical program can be reviewed on the chapter website along with a list of exhibitors and a slide show, providing a lighthearted look at highlights of the day’s events. A limited number of Proceedings are available by e-mailing Harvey Smith [harveys@IMAPSne.org].
The IMAPS New England 30th Annual Symposium & Exhibition will be held in the same location on May 8, 2003. A Call For Papers and EarlyBird II Exhibitor Registration are posted on The Chapter’s Website: www.IMAPSne.org
SoCal 2002
The twenty-second Southern California Symposium with Exhibits was a success. The two-day Technical Sessions were very well attended. This year, we had one session of papers by the students of the University of California in Irvine, with a UCI professor as session chair. The other seven sessions were chaired by industry professionals, with papers by seasoned presenters. All sessions were a success thanks to the hard work of the session chairs. Networking was the best in quite some time.
The exhibitors were pleased with the attendance and the contacts made. Our final count was 174 attendees (99 registered no-shows) with 64 Exhibitor spaces sold. The accommodations were “great.”
