A major area of Electronic Packaging has been the use of electronics in medical applications. There have been many - automated DNA testing, the ingestible video camera, pacemakers and communicating Pacemakers, electronic controlled drug dispensing and monitoring of blood flow, etc.
We have seen very miniature electronics in the artificial retina work of Fraunhofer Germany, and various implantable devices. But there is little in the Packaging literature about these developments. Many authors try first for Medical Conferences, which focus on the scheme or idea of the device, and hardly mention the packaging.
This edition is a first attempt to bring some of the world of Medical Packaging to the attention of IMAPS readers. One is a state of the art X-Ray facility, and the other is focused on the treatment of cables for in vitro use.We hope you enjoy these two presentations.
