In late 1966 Jack Hinchey, Bob Waer, George Doyle and George West discussed the information void between the manufacturers of thick film materials and the engineers who were using them to develop products. They decided to bring some of these folks together to discuss this issue in detail. After a long planning cycle, a 2-day seminar was scheduled for February 21-22, 1967, at Ricky’s Hyatt House in Palo Alto, California. Electronic News provided some very helpful advertising and a couple of hundred people attended the meeting. They also announced that the entire meeting would be repeated in Los Angeles on February 23-24, 1967. With that, the Technical Thick Film Symposium came into existence and the International Society for Hybrid Microelectronics (ISHM) was born.
This meeting has now evolved into the symposium that we now enjoy every year with a technical program and exhibition that have made the founders and charter members proud. We thank them for their desire to “disseminate information” as that has been the cornerstone of our Society’s growth for these 40 years.
We will enjoy a special celebration during the Welcome Reception where we will pay tribute to these special people. There will be a running slide presentation showing people, places and products that have been elemental in the growth of IMAPS.
Several of the Society’s charter members are still heavily involved in the technology while others have passed. Their dedication and support for 40 years has allowed the Society to grow into a true international organization where technological breakthroughs are shared in a global environment. They are: Barry Altschul, Dan Amey, Ron Anjard, Ed Aoki, Jack Balde, Frank Bates, William Belko, Harold Bell, Thomas Berdner, Dennis Bernier, Harry Bonham, J. P.
