Companion Tours

Tuesday, November 4, 2008
9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Destination - Newport, Rhode Island: Our first stop will be one of our National Landmarks: a Newport Mansion. Newport’s Mansions trace America’s architectural and social history.  Next we will enjoy a bus tour along Ocean Drive with views of Narragansett Bay and the spectacular homes in Newport enroute to lunch.  The White Horse Tavern, originally constructed in 1652, will provide a very gentile lunch.  No building is believed more typical of colonial Newport than the White Horse Tavern, with its clapboard walls, gambrel roof and plain pediment doors bordering the sidewalk. It has been named the “Best Restaurant in Rhode Island,” with exceptional wine list, food and service (bring some cash if you like wine).  After lunch we will wander the streets and enjoy magnificent shopping for an hour or so.  We will wrap up the day with a trip to the International Tennis Hall of Fame, the world’s largest tennis museum and home of the world’s largest collection of tennis memorabilia.

Wednesday, November 5, 2008
9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Destination - Mystic, Connecticut: Our morning will be spent enjoying The Museum of America and the Sea witnessing the lost art of wooden ship building.  The recreated freedom schooner Amistad was built here!  Wander through the nation’s foremost Maritime Art Gallery which specializes in contemporary marine art and ship models. Climb aboard another era on one of their historic vessels and learn about 19th century Clipper Ships.  Or stroll through the re-created 19th Century Village and be transported back in time, as you encounter historians, musicians and storytellers.  You’ll be on your own for lunch this day with lots to choose from.  Be sure to dress in warm layers if you’d like to experience the full museum…much is outdoors.  We will depart Mystic around 2:00 p.m. On our way back to Providence we will stop at the Culinary Archives & Museum which is part of Johnson & Wales University…a little nostalgia for all you food channel groupies.

Both tours will depart and return to the Westin Providence (our Headquarters Hotel).
