:: Rudolph Receives Multiple System Orders for Inspection, Metrology and Analytics of High-end Frequency Filters

Tools will be used to accelerate ramp and improve yields for SAW/BAW filters, a critical enabling technology for smartphones

Rudolph Technologies, Inc. has  announced that it has received multiple orders from a leading radio frequency (RF) filter manufacturer that includes five inspection and metrology tools in addition to process control software products. The equipment will be used to accelerate ramps and enhance yields in the manufacture of RF devices using surface acoustic wave (SAW) and bulk acoustic wave (BAW) filters, which have emerged as the best technology to meet the multi-frequency, signal filtering requirements of smartphones. Shipment of systems and software began in the first quarter and will continue throughout the second quarter 2015.

“Highly selective filters are a critical enabling technology for smartphones, which must filter the transmit and receive paths for 2G, 3G, and 4G wireless access methods in up to 15 bands, as well as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth® and the receive path of GPS receivers,” said Tim Kryman, director of metrology product management for Rudolph. “The phones must be able to isolate signals from one another and reject interference from other extraneous sources. The number of such devices is growing rapidly as more and more are added into cell phones and other mobile devices. A standard telephone may use one or two filters, while a smartphone may need 30-40. With the Internet of Things ramping rapidly, manufacturing of these components is likely to grow dramatically requiring measurement of multilayer metal stacks, including the critical piezoelectric layer, to ensure precision.”

Low Stress, Optically Clear, One Part Silicone Meets NASA Low Outgassing Specifications

Passing ASTM E595 testing for NASA low outgassing, Master Bond MasterSil 920-LO is a high performance, room temperature vulcanizing silicone for sealing, coating and small encapsulations. This single component system has a moderate, flowable viscosity and a solid electrical profile, which makes it well suited for conformal coating applications in the electronic and optical industries. Featuring a soft durometer of 25-35 Shore A, this low stress silicone can protect sensitive electronic components.

As a one part system, MasterSil 920-LO offers convenient handling with no mixing and has a neutral non-corrosive cure. Similar to other one component silicones, the curing mechanism is based on humidity, where the higher it is, the faster the cure. Its tack free time ranges from 45-60 minutes. MasterSil 920-LO bonds very well to a wide variety of substrates including metals, glass as well as many plastics and rubber materials. With its inherent flexibility, the compound can withstand rigorous thermal cycling and shock. It is also optically clear and has a refractive index of 1.43

It is serviceable over the wide temperature range of -175°F to +500°F and has a six month shelf life in its original, unopened packaging at room temperature. MasterSil 920-LO is available in syringes, 100 gram bottles, 200 gram bottles and pint containers.

Heraeus Goes Lean - Thick Film Technology Workshop - Stamped Circuit Board and Roll Clad Technologies

Heraeus Goes Lean
As part of our continuing efforts to make the Heraeus workplace a safe and productive work environment for our employees, Heraeus has implemented the Lean Manufacturing 7S philosophy which combines traditional 5S with an emphasis on safety and precious metal security. The goal of Lean Manufacturing is to increase productivity by reducing waste; and one of the more well-known Lean Manufacturing tools is 5S.

We have adapted 5S to 7S to include safety and precious metal security into the typical 5S system, with a focus on Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain in the workplace. The end goal is to have a clean, well-organized work environment in which our employees will enjoy working every day.

To implement these changes, Heraeus is reducing clutter in work spaces; removing unnecessary equipment and furniture; defining available and well-marked walkways; organizing workspaces; providing proper storage for tools; and clearly marking with floor tape the spaces for work areas, storage areas and walkways.

"Increased productivity is driven by cleanliness and organization through reducing clutter and providing clear, visual indicators in the workplace, with the concept of 'a place for everything and everything in its place' always in mind," said Nick Rusch, Thick Film Process Engineering Supervisor and 7S Co-Leader at Heraeus. "Our employees have spent a considerable amount of time implementing 7S in their work areas with the goal of getting to the point where 7S is not a separate event, but a daily part of their work day."

To improve efficiency and safety, the company-wide, standardized color-coding system is a key element in organizing the workplace at Heraeus. All work and operating equipment has a place and is easy to find. Since the direct visual cues are almost impossible to overlook, employees are saving time and processes are safer. This allows employees and managers to immediately identify deviations from the defined standard - and correct them.

Thick Film Technology Workshop
Heraeus Electronics will be hosting a Thick Film Technology Seminar on May 13-14, 2015, at its facilities in West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. The two-day, hands-on workshop allows attendees to become familiar with the principles, properties and purposes of thick film pastes.

The workshop will include an interactive presentation on thick film paste properties and the background principles of screen printing as well as other deposition methods. A plant tour will highlight the manufacturing process of thick film pastes. In the Heraeus Technical Service and R&D laboratories, attendees will receive hands-on training in screen-printing techniques, rheology measurement, thick film measurement, and much more.

Heraeus Electronics to Promote Stamped Circuit Board and Roll Clad Technologies

Advantest’s New Metrology Tool for Semiconductor Packaging Inspection Applies Non-destructive Terahertz Analysis to High-volume Manufacturing

Leading semiconductor test equipment supplier Advantest Corporation has introduced the TS9000 mold thickness metrology system, for measuring the thickness of semiconductor packaging. The new tool performs non-destructive analysis of the thickness of semiconductor packaging, and meets the high standards of speed and accuracy required for high-volume manufacturing. Its innovative inspection capabilities are expected to contribute significantly to product quality improvement amid the trends towards smaller device sizes and higher integration, driven in part by the widespread adoption of smartphones and tablets.

Advantest’s TS9000 enables rapid, repeatable, and highly accurate measurements of mold thickness, without the limitations of existing measurement methods. Highly adaptable, it can be deployed at various points in the assembly and packaging process, even immediately after the curing process, enabling earlier detection of production issues and improving product quality and yield.
